It makes perfect sense, right? You see someone and you don’t act on it– then they are gone. You officially suck. But no! wait! There is a chance, a chance that someone as foolish as you would go on Craigslist and post in the “missed connections” section. Whether it be your not so romantic: we kinda stared at each other for a bit, before you got off the TTC or romantic: we were on a fairy and you told me about your dreams and how you were leaving to go be a doctor in some impoverished nation. A connection by its very definition would suggest that you acted on linking with another person …ipso facto, you have a missed connection. Its really sad to go on there sometimes and read romantic ones, those stand out for me. I mean, you go to the MC section on the New York craigslist page and I swear that is where movies start… “you were the cute red-head who walked off besides Starbucks at Penn station”.
Opportunity cost: is the value of the next-best choice available to someone who has picked between several mutually exclusive choices/ it is the basic relationship between scarcity and choice. You have nothing to loose by going and talking to said person, you’ll probably never see them again. So if you think about the opportunity cost of talking vs not talking to them, its really a no brainer. So why then don’t we all just do that more? I don’t have any answers… everyone is different but the outcome is the same– When you don’t talk, nothing happens. For that reason I love/hate missed connections. I wish it didn’t have to be that way, but I’m glad at least there is an avenue for a happy resolution.
On an unrelated note, I coined a term that was rocking around the 211 earlier this year and I want to bring it back, Digital Panties: When you get someones phone number (guy or girl).
A: Hey man, you home?
B: Yeah– in the back, Whats up?
A: Remember that girl [insert girls name here]?
B: Speak ye fool!
A: Yeah, I got her Digital Panties is all…
B: AHHhhh shhh*t.
Come on Urban Dictionary!
