It makes per­fect sense, right? You see some­one and you don’t act on it– then they are gone. You offi­cially suck. But no! wait! There is a chance, a chance that some­one as fool­ish as you would go on Craigslist and post in the “missed con­nec­tions” sec­tion. Whether it be your not so roman­tic: we kinda stared at each other for a bit, before you got off the TTC or roman­tic: we were on a fairy and you told me about your dreams and how you were leav­ing to go be a doc­tor in some impov­er­ished nation. A con­nec­tion by its very def­i­n­i­tion would sug­gest that you acted on link­ing with another per­son …ipso facto, you have a missed con­nec­tion. Its really sad to go on there some­times and read roman­tic ones,  those stand out for me. I mean, you go to the MC sec­tion on the New York craigslist page and I swear that is where movies start… “you were the cute red-head who walked off besides Star­bucks at Penn station”.

Oppor­tu­nity cost: is the value of the next-best choice avail­able to some­one who has picked between sev­eral mutu­ally exclu­sive choices/ it is the basic rela­tion­ship between scarcity and choice. You have noth­ing to loose by going and talk­ing to said per­son, you’ll prob­a­bly never see them again. So if you think about the oppor­tu­nity cost of talk­ing vs not talk­ing to them, its really a no brainer. So why then don’t we all just do that more? I don’t have any answers… every­one is dif­fer­ent but the out­come is the same– When you don’t talk, noth­ing hap­pens. For that rea­son I love/hate missed con­nec­tions. I wish it didn’t have to be that way, but I’m glad at least there is an avenue for a happy resolution.

On an unre­lated note, I coined a term that was rock­ing around the 211 ear­lier this year and I want to bring it back, Dig­i­tal Panties: When you get some­ones phone num­ber (guy or girl).

A: Hey man, you home?
B: Yeah– in the back, Whats up?
A: Remem­ber that girl [insert girls name here]?
B: Speak ye fool!
A: Yeah, I got her Dig­i­tal Panties is all…
B: AHH­hhh shhh*t.
