Don’t Turn The Lights On from Chromeo1 on Vimeo.

The wonderful Jewish / Arab duo Chromeo from Montreal is just plain awesome. If you add some Belgium love to the duo, than you got something that is indestructible, adding a new dimension to the rare Jewish / Arab alliance.

Just Remember To Fall In Love

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I know, I know… I’ve been saying it a lot recently: “this song is amazing,” or “the best thing you’ve heard so far,” and so on and so forth.  But really, this post is a special one because there have been some amazing releases lately that I’ve just come across.  So without further adieu, lemme get to it:

The first is new Cut Copy!  I’ve been waiting for some new material by these guys for sometime now, and it seems my wish has been fulfilled.  You can sign up for their mailing list and download their new release at their website, or I’ve uploaded it here.  As well, I uploaded my aboslute favourite tune of theirs, ‘Hearts On Fire,’ from their album ‘In Ghost Colours.’  AMAZING ALBUM, get a hold of it!  I’ve seen this Australian act live and it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.  They produce some quality tunes, so check it out.  Judging by this new song, they are taking the next album in a refreshingly new direction.  Have a look for yourself.

The second new material is Pacific! They just released a tune called ‘Venus Rising.’  It sounds pretty cool, the new direction they’re taking reminds me of something Data might’ve released.  Following the trend, I’ve also uploaded my favourite tune of theirs from their album ‘Reveries.’  This was such a good album and this song was consistently played throughout my 2009/2010 (it is still getting played, it’s that great!).  Check it.

And now the best for last:  1/2 of Aeroplane has released a mix.  Stephen Fasano knows his tunes, and it shows with this new mix.  Hands down, this is the best electronic mix that I’ve heard all year, and we here at Unkitsch love our mixes and know them well.  58 minutes that’ll make your ears cream themselves.  Disco, Chill, Electro, House, etcetera– it’s all in this mix.  Start the mix and let that first song take you for a ride and then try to turn it off afterwards, I dare you, it’ll be rather difficult.  My favourite song that he used?  A remix of The Chemical Brothers’ ‘Swoon’ by Lindstrom and Prins Thomas (I love these dudes).  Swoon was featured on The Chemical Brothers’ new album that dropped this June, titled ‘Further.’  Get it.  I’ve uploaded ‘Swoon,’ the Lindstrom and Prins Thomas Remix, as well as a Boys Noize remix.  Swoon is so awesome (especially the Lindstrom Prins Thomas remix), definitely one of my top summer tunes for this year (if not THE top one).  Also check the music video, it is really creative and looks sexy as hell.  Check that shiiit!

Ready for Takeoff

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

June has thus far been a great month for new releases.  This time I’ve got some new Aeroplane for you (yeah– that awesome duo from Brussels).  Their single, “We Can’t Fly” is officialy coming out July 5th, but until then they’ve released an extended version of it (just to tide you over).  What a fantastic song, it has some soulful vocals and a driving beat that makes you want to move.  Let me tell you, these guys are something different.  I am so excited for their album which should be hitting this year, so look out!  Have also uploaded another original of theirs (from their EP “Pacific Air Race”), as well as a remix they did of a Grace Jones song (yep– sounds as good as you’re thinking) and a killer David Rubato remix by the duo (amazing tune, you’ve got to check it out).  Electro at its finest.

Did some research too.  It would appear that Aeroplane is signed to Eskimo Recordings.  Other artists on that label: Low Motion Disco (Aeroplane remixes them, some fantastic music going on there), Kathy Diamond, Headman, Prins Thomas, Sébastien Tellier, Tiga, Hercules & Love Affair, and many more.  I had no idea Eskimo was such an amazing label, they’ve gotten their hands on some of today’s best talent.  I want some Tellier and Aeroplane collaboration going on!  Would appear that Aeroplane is on tour in America too, here are the dates:

Downloads:

  1. We Can’t Fly (Extended Drums Mix) — Aeroplane ( taken down due to request)
  2. Above The Clouds — Aeroplane

Breakbot + Aeroplane

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Whaaaaaaat?!?!  Aeroplane just remixed Breakbot’s “Baby I’m Yours!”  I may have just creamed my pants…  Two of my favourite acts collide– I’m surprised the world hasn’t imploded.  Long (and awesome) buildup in this song, as expected by the Aeroplane duo.  Wait till that chorus kicks in, you might just cream your own pants.

Ed Banger has not been holding back since they signed Breakbot.

On Creativity

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Was just hanging out with Tristan and Alfred and they were watching some wonderful videos.  Of those were some speeches made by Sir Ken Robinson at the annual TED Conferences.

What is TED you ask?  Here’s what they have to say for themselves:

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, California, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK, TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Program, the new TEDx community program, this year’s TEDIndia Conference and the annual TED Prize.

It’s a fantastic website, definitely worth a bookmark and multiple visits frequently.  Anyway, as I was saying, Ken Robinson’s address was such an enthralling watch.  He attacks our education system at a global level, and explores how we have developed the need to suppress creativity.  This notion struck a chord deep within me, I was left amazed at how well Robinson communicated this idea and above all else: how right this man is.  As I find myself entering the creative industry I value Robinson’s philosophy more than ever and believe that we should all adopt it.  Don’t believe me?  Watch for yourself:

Some pretty inspiring stuff eh?  Speaking of creativity, here are some pretty creative tunes.  The first song is entitled “The High Road” by Broken Bells- I’m not too familiar with these guys but this has been a big song of theirs in 2010, so it’s fresh and neat (I love the ‘electronic element’ that they included) and worth some listens.  I’ve uploaded another fresh song called “The Worse It Gets” by Penguin Prison as well as a remix by Shook.  The next upload is by a new band called Lake Heartbeat.  This band sounds wonderful and I’ve gotten ahold of most of their material, so check back for more posts featuring their smooth dreamy tunes.  Also uploaded a new song by Clock Opera called “A Piece of String.”  Apparently lots of this song was created using rather unique ‘instruments,’ ranging kitchen appliances to utensils.  Last but not least is an Aeroplane remix that I came across, the duo never ceases to leave me impressed– this is a badass song!  Enjoy and Vive Le Creativity!

“I Want To Ride My Bicycle”

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

aristotle_build_16_image

I intend to get a cool bike when I move over to Hamburg (what kind of European would I be if I didn’t bike around everywhere?)- so I’ve been doing some research and have come across a couple neat discoveries.

The Bike Porter

A Bike Porter is an integrated handlebar and basket made by Copenhagen Parts.  This little thing provides an aesthetically pleasing/practical element to your bicycle.  Copenhagen Parts asserts that: “By integrating the basket into the handlebar, the Bike Porter offers a sublime transport option which works as part of your bike as well as introducing an evolution in style.” You can get it in a variety of colours too, so that it is deemed worthy of attatching to your shiny new bicycle.

Republic Bikes

This company strives to build bikes that you create, and let me tell you: they look sexy as hell.  Pop over to their website and play around with their bike creator, and you’ll see what I mean (you can customize the colours of almost every piece of the bicycle).  Seems like they deliver a quality product at affordable prices too.  They have two models, the ‘Aristotle’ (Singlespeed & Fixed gear) and the ‘Plato’ (a Dutch styled bicycle).  Interesting design going on with the Aristotle, as Republic Bikes has found a way for you to switch from fixie to singlespeed, so you people who enjoy cruising can still do so at your own whim (yay!).

Now for some new tunes to accompany you while you’re jetting off on your bikes!  I’ve really been into this song lately called “Cybernetic Love” by Casco- I love the robotic voice singing the chorus “cyber-netic… lo-loooove.”  I found it in the new Aeroplane essential mix (download it here: Aeroplane’s “500th Essential Mix Live from Circus Liverpool).  As well, I recently found this great remix of Das Pop’s “Underground” by those crazy aussies, Van She.  You’ll recognize “Underground” from a lot of Justice’s mixes; they really love that song hah (it is pretty awesome afterall, them Parisians have good taste).  The last song I just discovered this morning, entitled “End It Tonight” by a band called Tennagersintokyo.  I put their music video up for this song.  Seems like they’re a band of pretty gorgeous babes– that’s what I like to see, it’s pretty hot.  Their debut album comes out May 24th.  I also uploaded a remix by Nightschool (I prefer it to the original– it has more ‘oomph!” I say).

Name: Aeroplane, Location: The Sky

If I had to sum up Aeroplane in one word, it’d be: SUPERTOTALLYAMAZINGAWESOME.  Okay, maybe that’s a few words…  But they deserve it.  Truly.  These dudes know how to make a mix.  I first came across them last August, when I downloaded their Mix Chart August mix—when that Siruismo “High Together” beat kicked in I was forever sold.

What is so awesome about Aeroplane, you ask?  Other than the fact that they make amazing tunes, or that they are another duo bursting out of that awesome Euro scene (apparently they are from Belgium), it’s the fact that they release a new mix every month.  Below I’ve uploaded their 2010 January mix (because it opens with the new badass Breakbot track).  These mixes feature songs from various artists: Breakbot, Joakim, Moby, Gorillaz, Hot Chip, Friendly Fires, and many more.  The tunes they choose are hot!  Also, if that doesn’t satisfy your eargasmic needs, here’s the link to the duo’s official SoundCloud page, where they upload all their monthlies.  As a bonus, they provide tracklists there too, so if you find yourself curious about what a song might be in the mix, you can find out with one click.  So bookmark and be sure to check it often, you won’t regret it—each mix is one hour of electronic-ey bliss.

Aeroplane “Chart Mix” January 2010

These guys aren’t just mixers either, they produce some quality tunes too.  Need proof?  Tristan had their Friendly Fires’ “Paris” remix as his runner up for the best song of 2009 (Life in 2009).  That remix of “Paris” is one of my all time favourites; it never fails to hit the spot.  Still don’t believe me?  I’ve uploaded their song “Whispers,” when the tune comes together at 4:40 your mind will probably explode.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
