Non-Format

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Homeworkhomeworkhomework.  I’ve got lots of it but for the past few hours ended up dicking around downloading patterns, brushes, and gradients for Photoshop…  Although, I don’t feel like it has been a complete waste of time, considering some of these will help me do some future homeworks.  In the end, I suppose it has been procrastination…  Oh well, time to get to work now I suppose.

I’ve been working on a Typography assignment.  My inspiration?  Non-Format.  Never heard of these guys?  Well, two words: 1)BAD 2)ASS.  They do the coolest work.  Well, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here.  For those of you who have had your head in the sand: Non-Format is a company run by two dudes, Kjell Ekhorn (Norwegian) and Jon Forss (British), who have worked together since the year 2000.  They have done a range of projects ranging from art direction all the way down to fashion and yes, even typography.  You’ve probably seen their work in The Wire, that music magazine, as they have art directed it in the day.  They are basically just really, really, really good graphic designers, in my opinion.  Don’t take my word though, see for yourself and check out their site that I linked above.

So, I’ve had the visual inspiration for this assignment, and you can bet your asses that I’ve also had the musical inspiration.  What have I been listening to inorder to design some kickass posters?  None other than Mr. Etienne de Crécy.  I’ve taken the liberty of uploading my favourite tune of his (that has been getting replayed over and over while I’ve been working on these posters), ‘Fast Track,’ aswell as a live version he did where he mashes that tune up with Camille’s ‘Someone Like You’ and Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Never Be Alone.’  Amazing stuff.  Also check out the video that I put up, which features ‘Fast Track’ and the amazing live set de Crécy toured around with (props to Alfie for originally showing me this, this set would make Daft Punk proud).  SO COOL!

Dance!

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

It all started with Tristan and I this afternoon.  We went to grab some lunch at Fusaros here in Toronto (great place, recommend it to anyone who is a resident in these parts) and noticed the music they had going on in the background.  Was a bunch of songs straight from the late 1990’s/early 2000’s and we were really digging them.  Something about the music back then that you just don’t hear anymore…  Some great tunes (that would’ve been the clubbing hits at the time) that get your feet moving, hips shaking (fists pumping too? haha), and body all-up-in-a-dancin’-groove.

Anyway, that little adventure inspired me to share some of those tunes.  These are all classics, and if they aren’t already in your library, now is your chance.  The song that started this all (that we heard in Fusaros) is Spiller’s “Groovejet” featuring Sophie Ellis-Bextor (yeah– that British babe with that damn sexy voice!), which reminded me of Modjo’s “Lady,” which made me think of Stardust, then Daft Punk of course, Alan Braxe, Jamiroquai, and so on and so forth.  Gotta love that train of thought.

As a bonus, I just noticed that Alfred (or Tristan) linked the new Breakbot music video on our FaceBook Unkitsch page!  This is his first music video, and he did it with style (no surprise– he is one of our favourites here).  So, without further adue, I present Breakbot’s “Baby I’m Yours (feat. Irfane):”

New Kavinsky

calltour

Yep.  That’s right, some new Kavinsky for you all.  He recently just dropped an EP titled “Nightcall.”  Apparently he has been stuck in the studio working hard on his next album, and this is proof.  Seeing as he is buddies with that whole Ed Banger Parisian scene, maybe we can expect some new Justice soon?  I wish…

There’s not much else to say about Kavinsky other than: badass.  It’s the sort of music you play when you ride up to some hip nightclub in your leathers and matte black motorcycle waiting for all those hotties to jump your bones.  Unfortunately, we all don’t have motorcycles or sexy babes around our arms, so, no shame if you’re giving it a listen in your bedroom or on the way to class.  I’ve uploaded the song “Nightcall” and a remix by none other than Breakbot.  Apparently Kavinsky did the vocals himself on this track, alongside his girlfriend Lovefoxxx from CSS.  Pretty neato.  Did I mention it was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk fame?  I bet you’re intrigued now.

Euro

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

I have in my mind crafted over the years, this distinctly “euro” sound. Whether you are talking about the crazy electro that comes out of France, ala Justice and other contemporaries, older styles of Alan Braxe/ Fred Falke and Daft Punk reminiciscient of middle to late nineties electronic music, big names such as DJ Tiesto and trance types… I’m kind of at a loss for words about how much this genre of music has been crafted over the years in this european hot bed for electro. I don’t know what it is about the landscape or the culture of the people that has been so accepting of this type of music right from the get go, but I am grateful. Some may be quick to shoot down this kind of regional hoo ha, but I feel that dues should be paid to the birthplace for some of the bigger names in the field that have come out of Europe.

It is probably a bit late to now say– “the internet is going to change everything” — but the diffusion of music over the net has been amazing. While the rest of the world is now caught up to Europe in some of these areas in terms of success, I think that it will always have place in progressive music styles. Something about the culture just seems geared to it. As if it is ingrained in psyche of adolescent youth all over Europe. Anyways here are some picks.

The first came from Eddi via Nina– really got me into this whole “minimal dub-esque” music for when Im just working in my room. A nice beat, but without too much distraction so I can still get things done. The second is from Victor, who dropped this song down on afternoon where I can trully say I don’t know where I went for about 4 hours. Amazing. The rest of the songs are more nostalgia/famous– they don’t need introduction.
