Magical Numbers

The+Magic+Numbers+PNG+version

Their first self-titled album The Magic Numbers stands apart for my earlier music exploration days… I can distinctly remember seeing a review of this on Pitchfork years back (found it! link) and listening to one song– that was enough for me to run out and get the album.

Their follow up didn’t really strike a cord the same way the first one did. A time and a place? I don’t know– I hope maybe someday they’ll come back.

The 3 minute mark on Love Me Like You and the 3 minute mark on Which Way to Happy both stand out for me on this album.

Two+Door+Cinema+Club

Two Door Cinema Club are fantastic. I loved “Something Good Can Work” but that pales in comparison to the excitement I have for some of the new tunes that are leaking off their debut LP titled: Tourist History. They just have that pop-rock awesome feel that I love. Its got more depth and more layers and just sounds fantastic. I would echo the sentiments expressed on AsianManDan that this record is polished. Way to go dudes. With such a great collection of songs they will undoubtedly have a fantastic summer touring schedule lined up. Hopefully everyone can catch them. Their songs lend to that fun sunshine atmosphere for sure. Look out 2010– Two Door Cinema Club are ready to kick some ass/ sign me up.

If You Like Noise / Experimental / Post-rock

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Here are some goodies for you to check out.

Fuck Buttons is a two-piece experimental group from London, England, bringing Noise and Drone to the world in a non-threatening way.

No Age Hailing from LA, this Noise-Rock band is more Indie-friendly. Suitable for those who are perhaps not so ready for Fuck Buttons, but are tempted to try dipping their toes into the pool of Noise gently.

World’s End Girlfriend This Japanese one-man Post-Rock / Experimental band is more Ambient and Electronic than the other two I have just suggested. Great with a cup of cocoa.

Fridge is a British trio offering a more melodious kind of Post-Rock. If Cinematic Orchestra and Four Tet ever had a one night stand in a corn field under some stars and made an accidental-but-meant-to-be lovechild, it would be Fridge.

Wavves is a relatively new Noise-Pop / Punk band from San Diego, California. Formed very recently they have already gained a massive following both in America and across the pond, here in London, UK (I have an ‘i heart wavves’ tshirt that I wear under all my other shirts … just kidding?) Goths are now allowed in open sunny spaces thanks to Wavves. All their songs sound like they’ve been recorded in an airtight sound-proof bathroom filled with hazy weed smoke, so yes, if you’re wondering why the sound quality is so low, it’s not because your mac speakers are fried: welcome to the wonderful world of extreme psychedelic lo-fi.

MP3s (click on link to preview, right click save as to download)

1. Fuck Buttons — Race You To My Bedroom / Spirit Rise

2. No Age — You Is My Hot Rabbit

3. Worlds End Girlfriend — Singing Under The Rainbow

4. Fridge — Insects

5. Wavves — Weed Demon

Ok I think I have posted enough for today, enjoy the music! Next time: lo-fi / punk / grunge / weird shit.

The Dodos

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

This breakout band, The Dodos, of 2008 with the hit album Visiter have been busy. They churned out a new album Time to Die (2009),but if you take last.fm stats seriously then either not many people have picked up this new album or the Visiter is still rocking, it is. I didn’t really pay much attention to these guys last year. At the time I don’t think that I was really into this whole Fleet Foxes esque guitar-y folk style. A year later and I am picking up on all of this stuff that I missed out. “Red and Purple” and “Park Song” (dedicated to Maggie and Laura) are my two favourite tracks off Visiter and “Fables” is off Time to Die, its a bit of a grower but give it a chance.
