The xx/Hot Chip Live in TO

the-xx

N: Last night Toronto was invaded by the Brits.  Tristan and myself were there to soak up all its eargasmic glory.  Let me tell you, what a great night it was!  We like to say we got two quality concerts for the price of one.  The xx was so smooth sounding, I was left mesmerized.  It really fit as last night was the evening of 4/20, the place reeked of marijuana, I’m sure all those stoners were blown away and transferred to some new magical musical environment hah.  After a short break Hot Chip came on and in good timing.  They opened with “Hand Me Down Your Love,” and left us super pumped for the rest of the show.  I think the most powerful song was “Over & Over,” Tristan joked about how he almost had to leave because it was mega-intense, when that chorus kicked in the crowd went crazy and I think my ears almost exploded because it was so loud.  I literally felt the music shake my body, and that’s what I like to experience when I see such an act.  They are such a cooky band, and I love it.  They joked about all night long, and the frontman Alexis Taylor was sporting a Wham! t-shirt, which I thought summed up the band’s sense of humour.

I’ve uploaded some of both bands’ tunes incase some of you aren’t familiar.  “Intro” is an instrumental but really sets you up for the “xx sound,” and it was fittingly the song that the trio opened up with.  “Shelter” is my favourite xx tune, and it blew me away last night when they played it.  The Hot Chip songs below are pure classics: “Over & Over” is a must in your music library, and “Ready For The Floor” is my favourite tune of theirs.  They closed the show with that song in their encore, and it made the evening that much better for.  I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when they played it, and the live twist that they put on it is pretty awesome.  Last is from their new album, “One Life Stand.”  If you haven’t gotten a hold of it yet, you must, I think it’s Hot Chip’s best work to date.

Our next concert is the amazing Brazilian duo, The Twelves and all us Unkitsch boys are going to it.  So be sure to check back for some sort of report.  Till then, enjoy the sounds of The xx and Hot Chip!

T: My thoughts… hmm.. this was the loudest fucking concert I’ve been to in my life. It was so loud that at one point I asked Nick whether he was breathing through his mouth because my nostrils were humming and it was really strange feeling. It was so loud that you couldn’t think — only kind of groove with the crowd.. the hour and half set seemed to just pass us by and before we knew it they were finishing up with an amazing encore of “Ready for the Floor”. What stole the show was the performance of “Over and Over”. It was to put it bluntly: eargasmic. The video doesn’t really do it justice– but hopefully you get the point.

Beach House Live

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

T: Alfred and I made a trip to the Opera House on Queen East for a great show by Beach House. The opening act was from New Zealand, Bachelorette. Great way to start the summer concert season!

A: Bachelorette’s solo performance, opening for the Beach House was unique, it definitely got that indie feel to it and she had this most wonderful, shy New Zealander accent. Basically I find her very “cute”, cute little quiet voice, short hair, I just might have a crush on her, not going to lie… Beach House than came on at about at about 10:30, their set had these diamond shaped reflective things, with perfect lighting… they were really cool, at some point they just seem to be floating behind her. The concert was very mellow, basically it helped de-stressed my intense last week’s work habit… which by the way if I had kept it up forever, I’d probably cure cancer, but no thanks.. too tiring or I’m just lazy.

Anyways all in all, it was a great experience, and oh one thing I forgot, their live performance was top notch, it sounded incredible, matching up to the sound of their album “Teen Dream”, (and everyone should look into that album ), which was definitely a very important factor for me for a live performance, don’t want to hear bad bands with bad vocal.

I Blame You

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Its catchy and its stuck in my head. I blame you. But also, thanks. One more thing– I’m going to dance like this from now on, I see it as an improvement from my usual mishmash of 50s swing, 70s funk and early 90s post-modern interpretative dance.

20091105 Lolas_french toast cheesecake

I had two awesome meals in a row this weekend. TWO. Which brought me to discuss with my superhero friend: ccy, the difference between eating for the sake of eating, because you need sustenance to survive, and the actual joy of eating. The two meals were definitely of the later. Peter Pan on Queen and Peter had an awesome Winterlicious menu with braised lamb shank and polenta, a new favourite of mine. While the brunch menu at Lola’s Commisary was simple and classic with an Eggs Benedict and Cheesecake stuffed french toast. My world is all out of sorts, the food was delicious and so cheap. I wish there were more places like that close to my home. Winter is not exactly the prime time for exploring the culinary delights around the city. You must first have a plan — take a cab (this was the easiest and most cost effective, especially going in pairs or groups), then you must have a reservation (if you are doing the winterlicious business).

The whole other point of this was… I eat the usual shit that university students eat, fuck I hate going to subway, what the fuck else am I supposed to eat late on a saturday afternoon when I don’t feel like trekking over to get groceries? I was so pissed though because while a sub costs $11, the amazing eggs benedict I had was only $11. So the problem is– WHY?? I would rather have one Lola’s Commisary in every neighbourhood than 10 Subway sandwich places. ffs.

Here is a song my good friend Edouard, from Paris, passed on to me that was played at the Mr.Scruff concert at Wrongbar a couple weeks back.

Wanda

I loves me some good cookies, and whats going over at Wanda’s Pie In The Sky in Kensington Market is full of win. I’ll shamelessly promote these delectable treats because quite simply– they are the best damn cookies in Toronto. I have a preference for the Triple Chocolate (take a wild guess what kind of chocolate they use, hint: light and dark), although if I end up with one of the nuttier varieties I’m still a happy camper. Question: Whats better than one cookie? Answer: Two.

All of this cookie business is making me want to dance — also, I just handed in a bunch of term assignments– almost got that degree in my hand!

Our little music hub is still in a funk. SO stick with us, it’ll be back. Until then– mediafire it is!

0° Celsius

0° Celsius, thats how cold it was here in Toronto this morning folks. I don’t know about you but I didn’t think that we were living in an Arctic climate. What happened to fall? I really enjoy fall here. The changing colours of the leaves, the fresh air, wearing all my “cool” fall gear. It ain’t going to happen this year it seems. Winter came by my house this morning and gave a resounding “Whats up!?”

Weather moaning aside though, I’m quite enjoying life right now. Sorry for the absence of posts, everyone knows this time of year is really tough, what with all the mid-terms and work. Gotta find time to do those things which we love most and keep us sane.

This blog has been lots of fun and Im happy to report that we have lots of visitors! Its nice to see that so many of you come back time and again for our little snippets of “cool” and that Unkitsch is growing nicely. Not like every website has to be massive and always continue to grow, Im just happy that I have this venue to express myself through a different medium and one where the singular vision is simply to find cool and interesting things to share with all of you.

The success of Unkitsch has been the uncluttered nature of the site and simple straight-forward design, of which all the hard-work can all be attributed to Alfred! Michelle’s posts are always very colorful and she has a nice thematic focus that I am jealous of and try to emulate. Im happy to just throw up some good tunes and without all of the fanfare. So, I just want to say thanks for stopping by and without further ado here are some wicked tunes which have been the soundtrack to my life through October. Enjoy. LOVE Tristan.

The Twelves 12/09/09

the-twelves

The Twelves played at The Wrong Bar on Saturday night in Toronto. I was fortunate enough to be there with Tristan as well as Nick to experience of such an event.  The night started off with several bottles of cool beer, long walks, vodka and a cab ride. The Wrong Bar was placed relatively far West from where we usually venture to and that was an adventure just by itself. Sitting at the Wrong Bar at 12:00 was… quiet, we became quite skeptical about it. The house DJ was blasting some nice tunes, the lights were going all out and the smoke machine was just coughing smoke nonstop into the room, it had a weird smell to it, probably bad to your respiratory system one way or the other, but the dance floor was still empty. Finally the place got a little more pack and the sweat started to drip. The Twelves finally came on at 1:30 ish and kicked into action right away. Playing their well crafted remixes, ranging from Rich Girls by The Virgins, Daft Punk’s Voyager, Radiohead’s Reckoner as well as Empire of the Sun’s Walking on a Dream. There were more, but I don’t recall. Tristan was just basically overwhelmed and he looked completely stunned and shock the whole time, at least thats what I’ve noticed. By the end of the night, the room was even more smokier, stuffier and hotter, my ears were numb with joy, my legs were sore and we needed to get food asap…

Dawn was arriving, I got home, crawled into my den and passed out being absolutely satisfied.

St. Vincent Live

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Went to the show last night, awesome. Videos are good, but don’t really do it justice. She had a way of ending songs that made me feel like I was going to get destroyed by all of these things: a wall of sound, crazy bright strobe lights, Annie Clark’s musicianship, and her stunning good looks. Yes, I have crush on her.
