Just Do It

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

A few days ago we had a guest speaker at my school, an account planner named Simon Law, a man responsible for work such as Hewlett Packard’s “The Computer Is Personal Again” campaign.  He was a great guy and preached about ‘good’ advertising versus ‘great’ advertising, the idea was that it was a tale where ‘good’ is the bad guy.  Really inspiring stuff.

He showed us a variety of advertisements that exemplified ‘great,’ but one that I really enjoyed was a Nike SkateBoarding ad.  I found it online and decided to post it here.  I find this ad simply amazing, it embodies everything that a skater would cherish living the lifestyle– in short, they hit the mark with this advertisement.  Also great about it?  The track they used, titled ‘It Was a Good Day’ by Ice Cube (who also makes a cameo in the commercial with a variety of other celebrities).  Such a smooth, chilled, rap song.  It’s a must download, so I’ve uploaded it as well as the instrumental version (which is fantastic).  Watch that vid and download the tune, why deny yourself a little taste of ‘greatness?’

Non-Format

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Homeworkhomeworkhomework.  I’ve got lots of it but for the past few hours ended up dicking around downloading patterns, brushes, and gradients for Photoshop…  Although, I don’t feel like it has been a complete waste of time, considering some of these will help me do some future homeworks.  In the end, I suppose it has been procrastination…  Oh well, time to get to work now I suppose.

I’ve been working on a Typography assignment.  My inspiration?  Non-Format.  Never heard of these guys?  Well, two words: 1)BAD 2)ASS.  They do the coolest work.  Well, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here.  For those of you who have had your head in the sand: Non-Format is a company run by two dudes, Kjell Ekhorn (Norwegian) and Jon Forss (British), who have worked together since the year 2000.  They have done a range of projects ranging from art direction all the way down to fashion and yes, even typography.  You’ve probably seen their work in The Wire, that music magazine, as they have art directed it in the day.  They are basically just really, really, really good graphic designers, in my opinion.  Don’t take my word though, see for yourself and check out their site that I linked above.

So, I’ve had the visual inspiration for this assignment, and you can bet your asses that I’ve also had the musical inspiration.  What have I been listening to inorder to design some kickass posters?  None other than Mr. Etienne de Crécy.  I’ve taken the liberty of uploading my favourite tune of his (that has been getting replayed over and over while I’ve been working on these posters), ‘Fast Track,’ aswell as a live version he did where he mashes that tune up with Camille’s ‘Someone Like You’ and Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Never Be Alone.’  Amazing stuff.  Also check out the video that I put up, which features ‘Fast Track’ and the amazing live set de Crécy toured around with (props to Alfie for originally showing me this, this set would make Daft Punk proud).  SO COOL!

O. Children

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

If you like dark songs that you can brood with but still jam to at the same time, let me introduce you to O. Children. I read an awesome blog a few months ago (forgot what it was, otherwise I would credit it!! sorry) that described their sound so perfectly: like if Johnny Cash rose from the dead and became the undead frontman of a band of sexy zombies.

Now that Summer’s here and the sun’s out, like, all the bloody time, who knows how much longer this Vampire / Zombie / general-fascination-with-the-dead Fad is going to hold up. Better enjoy it while it lasts.

All Mp3 files below are hosted on mediafire. Download individually or click here to get all of em in one go.

KRAKEN

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Kraken is a brand that makes black rum. Their whole branding strategy revolves around the experience of  dangerous, mystical beast and perhaps pirates?. Eitherway, it is pretty amazing stuff, when you order their rum, you can may get it in this sweet little crate. In the crate you will find the rum with it’s fantastic illustrative kraken for it’s label, as well as a scroll that explains it’s story and background. It’s obvious the designer had done a great deal of research and exploration, planned out how to execute this brand and bring it into the whole packaging, which really speaks about what the brand is all about. This is a great example of branding in it’s finest. The company also launched 3 well made videos to help promote their product and their pretty awesome, and here they are…

Great Music + Video

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Vanishing Point from Bonsajo on Vimeo.

This incredible video is created by Bonsajo. I think I’ve watched it 30 times, and it still does not get old. The video syncs perfectly with the music, with the help of great graphic explorations such as the utilizations of simple shapes and form. Takuya Hosogane was able to create this mind blowing brain candy.

On further note, the pass two weeks had gotten a lot more exciting. Finally there are some great tracks that I can get excited about. One of these are ‘Get Stellar, another great emerging Australian group. Check out their new EP titled “The Moment“ if you can!

1. No Kids — For Halloween

2. Get Stellar — The Moments ( GLOVES remix)

3. Get Stellar — The Moments ( Def Starr Remix)

New Norah is Hot

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Norah+Jones+eus30003MF

I’m liking the new more bluesy feel on “The Fall”. I read a bunch of reviews of it but didn’t think much, it was only after seeing her on Conan over the holidays that I really gave it a good listen. Its a new direction for her sure, but its also just part of growth. Some people point to the fact that she broke up with her long time boyfriend, sure, but I mean– she doesn’t have to be “snorah” forever. She’s got chops and talent, she’ll continue to churn out different kinds of albums down the road, no point in pin-holing her into that adult-contemporary jazzy grammy category forever.

The first stanza of Man of the Hour is awesome.

It’s him or me
That’s what he said
But I can’t choose between a vegan and a pot head
So I chose you
Because you’re sweet
And you give me lots of loving and you eat meat
And that’s how you became my only man of the hour

Wizard Smoke

Wizard Smoke from Salazar on Vimeo.

Amazing skateboard video by Salazar, great music and great visuals. It got such a free, light weight and young theme, I love it. Filmed in the beautiful province of B.C, Vancouver. The landscape shots and the powder effect (which he used flour and tempera powdered paint) are great eye candy. It definitely is  different from all the rest of the skateboard video I’ve seen in the past and I must say the majority of skateboard video qualities are getting better and better. They came a long way from those ghetto homemade backyard skateboard video found on youtube several year back to ultimately this beautiful, well put together video. Anyhow, you must be wondering what are these great music played in the video. So I did all the hardwork and here are the soundtracks in this video for you!
